"The same diversity of artistic experience that Romanino had was also accessible to Alessandro Buonvicino, called Moretto, but Moretto was unlike Romanino in that his certitudes were unassailable.  By comparison Moretto's temper has an almost ferrous consistency, exceptional in an artist of high gifts in this complex time.   . . .  What Moretto achieved of the capacity to make a nearly tangible duplicate in paint of unidealized reality exceeds at least the precedents in Italy.  Though linked in kind and purpose to an older style, in the context of the early twenties this mimetic power had the meaning not of an archaism but of an invention, invading a new reach of the possibilities of art."
