Mme Geoffrin

Hubert Robert (1733-1808) made the drawing below and the painting above in 1774. Both are known as Déjeuner de Mme Geoffrin.

Marie Thérèse Rodet Geoffrin (1699-1777) would have been 75 when these images were made. Hubert Robert would have been courting favor by representing the great hostess (whose Wednesday evening salon had remained continuously fashionable for 40 years) in simple garb at a simple meal, reading a book. Rococo Paris would have admired the cultivated asceticism of the scene.
