"Antonio Cavallucci was born in 1752 in Sermoneta near Rome and was a pupil of Stefano Pozzi and Gaetano Lapis, but was decisively influenced by Anton Raphael Mengs and Pompeo Batoni, with whom he was placed on an equal level by many of his contemporaries.  Cavallucci's art is interesting as a symptom of the penetration of northern "sensitivity" and emotionalism into Roman painting of the 18th century.  His strongly idealized and sentimental depictions of expressive faces struck his contemporaries as a revelation, as did the fluid, gently dispersed manner of his modeling and the soft, rather sweet contrasts of light and dark; these are qualities in which certain tendencies already present in the art of Batoni seem to have been carried even further.  After 1790 Cavallucci, who was on the verge of attaining great renown through his portraits, altar paintings and small devotional pictures, taught at the Portuguese Academy in Rome, but died soon thereafter in 1795."
