Like every other baby since the beginning of the world, Mabel Watson Payne would rather not have her face washed on any given occasion, if the choice were hers. In one of the old albums, I know there is a snapshot of her mother at a similar age mildly resisting a similar face-wash at my hands. I must try to find it and match it up with this one of my daughter's firm but gentle hands washing the face of her own reluctant (while still supernaturally lovely) child.
